I think you'd enjoy A Half Built Garden and To Shape A Dragon's Breath. And maybe The Red Scholar's Wake? In de Bodard's previous Xuya novella I liked the setups but I've found that there wasn't quite enough story to get into, but with the two this year it feels like she's really cracked it.
